Marlborough Toy Soldiers Set MF2 Bengal Native Infantry. Like new condition in original box. Figures have been on display and may require dusting. This set includes five foot soldiers accompanied by one officer all of which have been handcrafted by Marlborough Military Models in England. Marlborough offers a wide range of classic toy soldiers and historical characters. Each figure is hand cast and hand painted to ensure the consistent high quality that toy soldier collectors have come to expect and seek from Marlborough. This particular set features six Bengal Native Infantrymen including one ranking officer. The Bengal Native Infantry can be distinguished from the Bengal European Infantry by its origination. But both were regular components of the East India Company’s Bengal Army. The first Native Infantry battalion was founded and raised in 1757. One hundred years later by 1857 there were 74 regiments of Bengal Native Infantry within the Bengal army. The East India Company was in control of the Bengal army until the Government of India Act of 1858 which was passed in reaction to a mutiny within the Bengal army. This act granted control of the army and all of its infantry units to the British government. Under the control of the British government the number of regiments was reduced to 45. These Bengal Infantry regiments were renamed three times in 1861, 1864, and 1885 before being entirely absorbed into the British army in 1903. This set could be used to represent the Bengal army and its involvement in India or as a subset of the British army after the turn of the 20th century.
