Nearly a million Australians served in the military during World War Two, an amazing level of service for a country which has a total population, in 1945, of only seven million three hundred thousand. The mobilization for war transformed the country. At the outbreak of war in 1939, there were only 3,000 active full time soldiers in the entire country. The Australian Government formed the Second Australian Imperial Force in 1939. This force would grow to and eventually include over 300,000 men and women, over one hundred times the size of the entire pre-war regular active forces. Australian forces engaged in battle across the globe from Greece to China and from North Africa to New Guinea. The reputation as tough and tenacious foes that the First Australian Imperial Force had earned in World War One was guarded and expanded throughout the war.
