In 1891, Märklin released its first wind-up train with carriages that ran on standardized track. Marklin’s first products were sold to doll house collectors. Märklin not only set the standard in quality and durability, the track sizes they developed become the world standard. The first gauge was numbered 1 through 5 and was first shown to the public at the Leipzig Toy Fair in the late 19th century. HO scale was first produced in 1935 as a less expensive alternative to O gauge during the Great Depression. In the 1970’s, Märklin continued to innovate when they released the Z scale train.
