The Art of Building Plastic Model Airplanes- Part One

Aug 3rd 2017

The above video is one the most respected "how to videos" we have seen. We thought we should share it with our fellow model lovers!

The Art of Building Plastic Model Airplanes

Creating plastic model airplanes is not as tricky as it may seem. With that in mind, you do need to go through a few tasks that will help you complete and manage the process in a proper manner. Here are the steps that you need to focus on when you want to create plastic model airplanes!

  • 1.Select the model you want to build

The idea here is to opt for the best scale and skill level. While it can be a bit tricky at first, make sure that you start with something simple, so you can easily upgrade things as you go along.

  • 2.Define a workbench area

This is important because here you will use your brushes, paint, hammer and any possible tool that you may need. Plus, make sure that you keep this place clean, just to be safe.

  • 3.Acquire a magnifying glass

With help from such a unit, you get to have some of the best possible results. The outcome can be very rewarding since you can have a great sense of focus on what you do at that point.

  • 4.Open the box and analyze the parts and schematics

Make sure that everything is ok because problems can appear during shipping. If there are no issues, then you can start the entire process without that much of a problem.

  • 5.Identify the part number

Each part has a number, so try to see if everything is ok. Then, carefully, start removing each part based on its number. It’s crucial to do this, as it will start the building process.

  • 6.Clean the plastic parts

There may be some mold or any unwanted materials on the plastic parts. So, you want to make sure that you clean those parts with some water and soap. This will also help the paint adhere a lot better as well.

  • 7.Do your research

While you do have the schematics, opt for some research as well. Some history books or even internet images will show you how that finished plane should look like. This should offer you a good insight into the result that you can have here!

  • 8.Read the color chart and gather paint

Obviously, the color has to be accurate. You should find the right color via research, but try to study the color chart as that’s where you can see how to prepare that paint on your own. You can start painting and try to paint using only a color at a time. Also, leave that color to dry, as it will be a lot easier to eliminate any mistakes when you start adding other colors.

  • 9.Start with the first steps included on the schematics

It’s safe to say that each model airplane will be different when it comes to the construction process. But usually, the first thing you will add is the pilot. Then you will have to focus on creating the structure of the plane. Obviously, this is crucial since it will enable you to have the skeleton of that plane model. This way you can add to it as you see fit.

And these are the first steps that you need to consider when you create a plastic model airplane. But we have more to tell you, so check out Part II, which is coming very soon!
