You would not ordinarily link a freight locomotive built for dragging coal and iron ore through the mountains with the smooth ride associated with the luxury car, but the EMD SD7 defies easy categorizations.

What distinguished the SD7, however, was its 6-wheel flexicoil trucks which enabled the locomotive to ride so smoothly that the Trainmen of the Southern Pacific nicknamed it "Cadillac." Built as a roadswitcher, the SD7 (for Special Duty) was a massive locomotive - over 60 feet long and weighting 165 tons - and was powered by the same by the same reliable 1500hp 567B V-16 engine as the GP7 and F7.

Our SD7 brings to life this remarkable locomotive with all the fine detailing and performance extras you've come to expect from PROTO 2000 and will be offered in the following roadnames: B&O, B&LE, CB&Q, MILW, SP, EMD Demonstrator, C&NW, D&RGW, GN, PRR, UP and Chessie. An undecorated model is also available.
