The Great War

The Great War and toy soldiers have a complex and poignant history. The first golden age of toy soldiers in the 20th century arose after World War I. While toy soldiers and military miniatures are now highly collectible items, they were initially marketed to young children and many of these young children’s older brothers and fathers had fought in the Great War. Therefore, the boys wanted toy soldiers that looked like the pictures of their relatives from the Great War, and toy soldier companies met that demand. After World War II and through most of the 20th century, military men and women from that era became the most popular toy soldiers in production. Even though I grew up in the 1980's my earliest toy soldiers were German's fighting Allied troops in the European theater. Recently, John Jenkins Designs has reexamined and redefined the World War I toy soldier. John Jenkins Designs offers a large selection from The Great War, but these military miniatures are far more detailed and more honest than those that came before. The clean crisp uniforms have been replaced by more earthy and rugged soldiers that fought, killed, and died in those terrible trenches on the western front. John Jenkins Designs also offers less often depicted World War I theaters of operation like Gallipoli and Middle Eastern front. Trains and Toy Soldiers are committed to bringing the finest military miniatures available anywhere to you at reasonable prices.
